About Us.

Hunter Gatherer invests in and builds healthcare recruitment businesses.

Our proposition goes beyond just providing the seed capital or investment, we offer both the experience and a platform to launch and grow niched healthcare focused recruitment businesses.

Our role is simple: to provide the investment, business infrastructure, operations and on-going holistic support to entrepreneurs, enabling them to grow their company to be both successful and profitable.

Gavin Johnstone
CEO

Gavin is the founder of the Hunter/Gatherer Group. Gavin began his career working with Pharmaceutical companies, before launching a healthcare events and publishing company in 2004 which was acquired by EMAP, the business-to-business multiplatform media group owned by APAX partners and The Guardian Media Group in 2009. Gavin then launched the award winning Hunter Healthcare in 2011, overseeing it’s growth over a five year period from start-up to £14m, promoting a senior management team to continue this growth and success allowing Gavin the opportunity to launch and develop a stable of healthcare recruitment businesses.

Gavin lives in the Cotswolds with his wife and two sons. Interests outside of work include: family life, country sports, food and property.

Russell Clements
Non-Executive Chairman

Russell is the former CEO of SThree Plc an international specialist staffing business with approximately £1bn in annual revenue. Russell joined the company in 1986 shortly after its inception becoming its second employee. He was appointed CEO in 2004 and led the flotation of the the business on the London Stock Exchange in November 2005. During Russell’s tenure as CEO, the business grew from twenty offices of which five were overseas, to 64 offices in twenty countries. SThree has achieved 100% of its growth organically through the development of its operational brands Computer Futures, Huxley Associates, Progressive and Real Staffing. Russell retired from SThree in December 2012 after more than twenty-six years with the company. Russell is an Angel Investor and has stakes in a number of start-up businesses particularly in the recruitment industry and in the technology space.

Russell has a Degree in Government from the University of Essex & is a Graduate of the Advanced Management Program at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. Russell is also a former Chairman of the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCo).

Russell lives in London, Norfolk and Ibiza with his wife, with three children now at University across the globe.

Faye Evans
PA to the CEO

After studying design, Faye started her career working in financial recruitment for a large London based company. After a number of years working within the financial sector she was asked to launch a completely new area of specialism for the company in Leeds. Faye did this triumphantly and quickly established herself and the business and went on to lead a strong team of consultants.

Faye now lives in the Cotswolds with her family and their many pets. She has a strong interest in all equestrian activities and sits on many countryside committees, using her skill for organisation to head up social and fund raising events for various charities.

Since moving to the Cotswolds Faye has continued to work within recruitment, previously at a well established global headhunters based in Cheltenham and most recently for Hunter Gatherer. Supporting the business on an operational level is where Faye now finds her passion lies.

Sir Ian Caruthers
Advisor

In his 43 year NHS career, Sir Ian has transformed access to healthcare as well as the quality of services and financial performance in both national and local settings. He has overseen many major service changes and is a champion of change to deliver better outcomes for patients, staff and communities.

Sir Ian was previously Chief Executive of NHS South of England and Acting Chief Executive of the NHS. More recently he has undertaken a review of innovation in healthcare culminating in Chairing the Innovation Health and Wealth Board which forms part of the Government strategy for improving the spread of best practice in healthcare. He has published several papers on reviewing and improving the NHS.

Sir Ian is currently developing a portfolio of interests relating to healthcare and the public sector and is Chairman of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust; Chancellor of the University of the West of England; Chair of the Healthcare UK Governance Board; Chair of the IHW Implementation Board; Co-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia; Chair of NHS Supply Chain Customer Board; Non-Executive Director of Bioquell plc.; Non-Executive Director of OR International and acts as an independent advisor to NHS Chief Executives and NHS organisations.

Ian Carruthers received a Knighthood in the 2003 New Year’s Honours List, for services to the NHS.

Married with a son and daughter Sir Ian is a family man with a passion for football and cricket, supporting his teams and our national teams across the globe.

Kate Battes
Marketing Manager

Kate started her career working in industry as an office manager. She progressed from there to become a project manager for a global occupational psychology company and then communications manager for a local Government department. After a brief spell as Events Director for an ocean-rowing company, Kate launched her own business providing project management, consultancy, marketing and communications support to local Cotswold businesses.  Kate oversees communications & marketing at Hunter/Gatherer Group.

Kate lives in the Cotswolds with her husband and has just commenced a major renovation project on her home near Broadway. She enjoys walking, cooking and the occasional adventurous holiday.

Alice Stewart
Marketing & Communications Assistant

After studying Geography and Spanish at university, Alice started working at Hunter Healthcare in 2016 as a Researcher. In this role Alice supported on the delivery of a number of senior clinical leadership recruitment campaigns for the NHS and private sector. These included Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer appointments. She later joined a start up within the Hunter Gatherer Group, where as a Project Manager for Marketing and Research she led on the development of their marketing material. This included delivery of work both for the firm and externally commissioned clients. These commitments were coupled alongside operational and research responsibilities. Alice has now become a team member of Hunter Gatherer where she leads on developing and delivering marketing content and support for the companies within the group.

Alice lives in South London and outside of work enjoys travelling, keeping fit, playing hockey and cooking.
